Why boring wins

The bleeding edge is where the smartest, best-funded people in the world compete for the same prize. Boring businesses are the opposite trade: fewer bidders, understandable operations, and owners who are retiring rather than fundraising.

Fewer people want it

Nobody is bidding up a septic company. Competition for these assets is local, thin and often limited to the buyers a single broker happens to know.

The levers are ordinary

Pricing, scheduling, collections, staffing. The improvements that tighten margins in a boring business are legible on day one, not discovered after a pivot.

Cash flow you can check

You are buying an income stream that already exists, with a multiple you can verify against the rest of the market before you make an offer.

Eventually hands-off

Owner-operated today does not mean owner-operated forever. Many of these businesses are one manager hire away from running without you.

Finding one shouldn't take 40 browser tabs

Listings are scattered

The same market lives across four marketplaces and thousands of brokerage sites, each with its own fields, its own filters and its own duplicates.

Prices arrive without context

An $850,000 ask means nothing on its own. Without cash flow beside it you can't tell a bargain from a business priced on hope.

The numbers hide in prose

Half of all listings bury revenue and earnings inside a paragraph of copy, so screening turns into reading instead of filtering.

How BoringBuy works

  1. 01

    Aggregate

We pull active listings from the major North American marketplaces into one inventory with a single schema.

  2. 02

    Normalize and enrich

Prices, revenue, cash flow and location are parsed into structured fields. Anything recovered from listing text is labelled “Est.” so verified data stays distinguishable.

  3. 03

    Screen by multiple

Every listing carries a colour-coded cash flow multiple, so an hour of screening replaces a week of reading.

Set your multiple, see the market move

This is the live inventory, not a demo. Drag the range to the multiple you're willing to pay and open the matching deals in the DealFlow screener.

Find what cash-flow multiples are pricing.

Drag the range to screen the index by asking price ÷ cash flow.

1.0x – 3.0x

Potential value — verify before you underwrite

Active listings with valid multiples between 0.5× and 2.5×. Sold records, missing multiples and sub-0.5× data errors are excluded. A low multiple is a reason to look closer, not proof of a bargain.

Questions buyers ask

Why buy a boring business instead of starting something?
A laundromat, HVAC contractor or bookkeeping practice already has customers, pricing and cash flow on day one. You are buying an existing income stream and looking for margin the current owner left on the table, rather than searching for product-market fit against everyone else chasing the frontier.
Do I need operating experience to buy one?
Most listings on BoringBuy are owner-operated businesses in mature, slow-changing industries, which is exactly why they are approachable — the operations are legible and the levers are ordinary: scheduling, pricing, collections, staffing. That is a judgement call only you can make, so BoringBuy focuses on giving you the numbers, the seller-financing flags and the broker contact to run your own diligence.
What is a cash flow multiple?
Asking price divided by annual owner cash flow (seller's discretionary earnings). A business asking $600,000 on $200,000 of cash flow trades at 3.0×. It is the fastest way to compare two listings that otherwise look nothing alike.
What counts as a good multiple?
For owner-operated small businesses, deals at or below 2.5× are cheap, 2.5×–4× is the common fair band, and above 4× you are usually paying for growth, contracts or real estate. BoringBuy colour-codes every listing on that scale, and industry hub pages show the median so you can judge in context.
Where does the listing data come from?
Public brokerage marketplaces including BizBuySell, BizQuest, DealStream and BusinessesForSale. BoringBuy normalizes the fields into one schema so prices, revenue and cash flow are directly comparable.
What happens when a broker doesn't publish the numbers?
BoringBuy parses the listing copy to recover figures that were written in prose, and labels every recovered value with an “Est.” chip. You can switch on “verified figures only” in the screener to hide anything that was not published as structured data.
Do I need an account to save listings?
No. Your watchlist is tied to your browser, so you can start saving deals immediately. Free accounts can hold 10 saved listings; Operator removes the cap.
Can I export the data?
Yes. Operator and Firm can export any filtered result set to CSV, including derived financials and DealFlow scores. Firm adds API and MCP access for pulling the market into your own models.
How often is the market refreshed?
Listings are re-fetched from the source marketplaces on an ongoing basis, and every page you load reads the current inventory — the counts and medians on this page are live, not cached marketing numbers.
